Softball gets season rolling with stellar hitting performance over SUNY Adirondack
Softball:
The Lady Knights returned home from their South Carolina trip with a 3-5 record, and started their remaining 30 games Saturday with a trip to SUNY Adirondacks for two games. Lady Knights opened the scoring in the top of the first thanks to two doubles. CCRI Lady Knights first got on the board when Grenier doubled, scoring two runs. SUNY Adirondack then took the lead, 4-3, before CCRI took it back, making the score 6-4 in the top of the second after Zoe Battersby doubled, scoring two runs. The Lady Knights scored six runs on four hits in the top of the third inning. Kathryn Motta doubled, scoring two runs, Grenier drew a walk, scoring one run, Sophia Chevian singled, scoring one run, and Sophia Valentini doubled, scoring two runs. In the bottom half of the third inning, Zoe Battersby made a spectacular catch in the outfield to steal extra bases away from Timberwolves.
In the top of the fourth, Brianna Grenier hit a solo home run to extend the Knights lead to 15-4, and thatt would remain the final score for the game. Sophia Chevian earned the win in the circle for the Lady Knights. The two-way pitcher gave up six hits and four runs over five innings, striking out five and walking two. At the plate Chevian was 1 for 4 with an rbi, good for a .393 average so far on the season.
In the second game of the doubleheader, both teams bats were on fire, totaling 34 total runs. The Knights bats were blistering, recording 19 of the games 33 hits. SUNY Adirondack jumped out to a lead in the bottom of the second inning after Alyssa Jaffe doubled to left field, Maddie Pincheon doubled to center field, and Natalie Conroy doubled down the left field line, each scoring one run. SUNY Adirondack added two runs in the third. Marissa Jarvis singled to center field, making the score 6-2 in favor of the Timberwolves. Lady Knights flipped the game on its head in the top of the fourth, scoring eight runs on six hits to take the lead, 10-6. The biggest blows in the inning were a double by Motta that drove in two and another solo shot from Brianna Grenier. SUNY Adirondack didn’t go quitely, taking the lead once again scoring six of their own in the bottom of the fourth, and force Rhode Islands hand. Hannah Smith came up with a spectacular catch to keep the Timberwolves lead from extending. Following the catch, Zoe Battersby launched her first home run of the season to give Rhode Island the lead back, driving in three. Brianna Grenier stepped up to the plate and cleared the fence by 75 feet to score 3 more and put the game out of reach for SUNY. The Knights won 20-14 and swept the series.
The Lady Knights had their two games Saturday away at Monroe University cancelled this weekend. The games will not be made up. The next games are against Dutchess Community College at home at Woodlake Park in Johnston this Sunday at 1 and 3 PM.
Baseball:
Baseball had two games that were cancelled due to field conditions on Saturday, March 22th against Lasell.
The Knights will have a “home” game, Tuesday, March 25th, hosting New Hampshire Technical Institute at URI at 3:30 PM. The Knights will then travel for a single game against Massasoit on Thursday, March 27th at 3:30 PM. They will finish out the week hosting Massasoit on Saturday, March 29th at 12 and 3 PM
