Baseball:
CCRI Baseball kicked off a 4-game slate this week starting with UConn Avery-Point, followed by a 3-game series against Bunker Hill.
Despite out-hitting UCONN Avery Point nine to six, CCRI fell 6-3 on Tuesday. CCRI jumped out to an early lead in the top of the second when Dylan Perreault doubled in a run and Aiden Bolwell followed with a two-run single to make it 3-0. However, an error by CCRI helped UCONN Avery Point tie the game at three in the bottom of the fourth. UCONN Avery Point took the lead in the fifth when Lopresto hit a sacrifice fly to make it 4-3. In the bottom of the eighth, Bureau homered to right field, driving in two more runs and extending the lead to 6-3. Tyler Reall started for CCRI, giving up three hits and two unearned runs over three innings while striking out five. Owen Aivaliotis took the loss, surrendering two unearned runs on no hits across two innings. Nine different players recorded hits for CCRI, with Bolwell leading the team with two RBIs.
The next game opened up a three-game series against Bunker Hill this one being at Bunker Hill. Unfortunately, CCRI’s offense just could not get going in this game. Kelvin Santos and Alan Carpenter each collected the only hits in the game for CCRI. Bunker Hill, on the other hand, recorded 15 hits, resulting in 5 runs and a 5-0 shutout win. CCRI did not play bad, but just did not get their offense to produce. The Knights moved onto the next game of the series Friday at home against Bunker Hill.
Chris Piscione drove in four runs on two hits to lead CCRI past Bunker Hill 14-5, on Friday. CCRI got on the board first in the bottom of the first when Piscione launched a two-run homer to left field. They added two more runs in the second inning after Alan Carpenter doubled down the left field line. Bunker Hill took a brief 5-4 lead in the top of the fourth on a three-run home run by Carlos Rodriguez. However, CCRI quickly responded in the bottom half, regaining the lead when Aiden Bolwell singled to right and Kelvin Santos singled to center, each scoring one run. In the fifth, Piscione hit a sacrifice fly to tack on another run for CCRI. The offense exploded in the sixth with five more runs on four hits, highlighted by a solo home run from Kody Fretts, a two-run double from Dylan Perreault, and a two-run single from Piscione. Brayden Beard started on the mound for CCRI, allowing nine hits and five runs over four innings with seven strikeouts and one walk. Clyde Boutier came on in relief and threw three shutout innings, giving up just one hit, striking out three, and walking none.
The Knights looked to win the series against Bunker Hill in their second game of the day on Friday. Rhode Island put up eight runs in the first inning thanks to an Alan Carpenter three-run triple, an error that scored one run, a bases-loaded walk drawn by Dylan Perreault, and a three-run double by Josh Pedus. Santos continued the momentum with a solo home run to left field in the second inning, followed by a home run from Kody Fretts, pushing CCRI’s lead further. In the third inning, CCRI added two more runs after Fretts grounded out and Chris Torres walked, each driving in a run. Santos also contributed a double in the third and a single in the first. Pat Mitchell got the start for CCRI, pitching five innings, allowing six hits and three runs while striking out six and walking three.
The Knights are now 10-4 in the region, good for 3rd place. The Knights will play Nichols College JV Wednesday and then look to pickup another region battle vs Quinsigamond on Thursday and Saturday.
Softball
CCRI Softball has won 14 straight games headed into a matchup with NAIA’s Southern Maine, who came in 22-6 on the season, and also on a 14 game win streak.
Unfortunately, the Lady Knights win streak would come to a close, as they lost 8-0 in 5 innings in game one against the Seawolves. Southern Maines ace, Sarah Wilkens, pitched a no-hitter with 4 walks in the win, and looked unstoppable in the circle.
The Knights looked to bounce back in game 2, and proved to not go down quietly. Sophia Chevian was in the circle for the Knights. It did begin similarly to game 1, with CCRI surrendering an 8-0 first inning lead, but Rhode Island would finally get the bats going, scoring 4 runs in the 2nd and 3rd to make it a 9-8 game. The game remained a 1 run affair until the 6th, when Southern Maine broke through and scored 4 runs in the inning to pull away for good, and win the game 14-9. Kathryn Motta and Sophia Valentini led the offense with 2 hits a piece and Zoe Battersby knocked in a 3 rbi’s.
The Knights will have a doubleheader scheduled for Wednesday vs Roxbury at Winslow Park in Warwick.
