Knights Battleground Week 28
Baseball, Softball outscore their opponents 83 to 12 in perfect 6-0 week
BASEBALL:
The CCRI baseball team had an outstanding week, going a perfect 4-0 in their games including a 3-0 sweep of Roxbury.
CCRI secured an 11-1 win against Nichols JV on Wednesday. Alan Carpenter led the charge, going 3-for-5 with a double and two singles. The offense exploded in the seventh inning, scoring six runs, with contributions from Derek De La Cruz, Carpenter, Kody Fretts, and Noah McParland, each driving in runs. Starting pitcher Brayden Beard was dominant, throwing five scoreless innings, allowing just two hits while striking out four. The win was highlighted by a total of 19 hits for CCRI, with Carpenter and Josh Pedus each collecting three hits.
The Knights offensive prowess continued in a 15-0 shutout win over Roxbury on Friday. Josh Pedus started the scoring with an RBI single in the first, and the offense kept rolling from there. Dylan Perrault homered, and Kelvin Santos delivered a grand slam, driving in six runs. The offense piled up 18 hits, with Damon Ascencio leading the way with three hits. Logan Dean earned the win for CCRI, tossing five scoreless innings while striking out five.
CCRI beat Roxbury again in their second game on Friday, this time in a 21-11 slugfest. Santos was the star of the game, collecting six RBIs, including a grand slam in the third inning. Pedus and Perrault also contributed heavily, with Pedus finishing with four hits. CCRI piled up 20 hits in this high-scoring affair, and pitcher Clyde Boutier earned the win, striking out seven over four solid innings. Despite a late rally from Roxbury, CCRI’s early dominance was too much to overcome.
Their last game of the week was away at Roxbury on Saturday. The game was closely contested, but CCRI pulled ahead in the fifth inning, for a 6-3 Knights win. Pedus and Perrault’s timely hits drove in runs to give CCRI the lead. Pat Mitchell earned the win with a strong six-inning performance, allowing just two runs and striking out eight. Pedus closed out the game with a save. CCRI’s 14-hit attack was led by Fretts, who went 2-for-5 with two RBIs.
Looking ahead for CCRI, they have 4 games this week, starting with back to back home games Wednesday and Thursday in Warwick at 3:30 PM vs UCAP and Holyoke. They will end the weekend on Sunday by traveling to Holyoke for a doubleheader at 12 and 2 PM.
SOFTBALL:
The Lady Knights highlighted their week with an overwhelming 17-0 win game 1 win over NHTI on Wednesday. They wasted no time in jumping ahead, scoring seven runs in the first two innings. In the bottom of the first, Sophia Valentini tripled to score three runs, and an error added another. The second inning was highlighted by Brianna Grenier’s three-run homer, followed by a series of key singles from Kayleen Kim and Kathryn Motta to push the lead even further.
Valentini not only played a key role at the plate but also on the mound, throwing 4.2 innings of shutout ball. She surrendered just two hits, struck out seven, and walked none. Her offensive contributions included going 3-for-4 with four RBIs, leading the charge for CCRI. The Lady Knights finished with 16 hits, with Valentini and Hannah Smith each contributing three hits.
In their second game of the day, the Lady Knights continued their dominance with a 19-0 shutout. Zoe Battersby was the standout performer, driving in four RBIs with a home run and a single. The team exploded for 13 runs in the third inning alone, with Battersby’s three-run home run being the highlight of the frame.
The offensive onslaught began early, with Sophia Chevian’s RBI single in the first inning and a five-run second inning, where Jaiden Harding, Brianna Grenier, and Valentini each contributed key hits. In the third inning, a flurry of singles, doubles, and errors helped the Lady Knights pile on the runs.
Pitcher Janina Mazzulla was equally dominant in the circle, pitching a complete-game shutout. She struck out seven batters and didn’t walk a single one while allowing just three hits. Valentini had another strong outing at the plate, collecting four hits, and both Battersby and Harding added to the offensive barrage with four RBIs each. The Lady Knights finished with 19 hits in the game, overwhelming NHTI in every aspect.
This week the Lady Knights have 6 games, 3 doubleheaders. They start this Wednesday at Winslow Park at 3 and 5 PM vs Roxbury, followed by Friday at 2 and 4 PM vs Central Maine. Then the Knights will travel to Dutchess on Sunday for a doubleheader at 1 and 3 PM.
